Clean the gutters
Clogged gutters make ice dams worse. Clear leaves and check that downspouts drain away from the foundation.
Trim branches
Heavy snow and ice can snap limbs onto the roof. Trim anything overhanging.
Fix small problems now
Loose shingles and cracked flashing are cheaper to fix in fall than after winter water damage.
Check the attic
Look for daylight, damp insulation and blocked vents.
