How they form
Heat from the house warms the upper roof, snow melts, and the water refreezes at the cold eaves. The ridge of ice traps water, which backs up under shingles.
Real prevention
Air-seal and insulate the attic, improve ventilation, and install ice and water protection along the eaves when the roof is replaced.
What not to do
Chipping ice with hammers or axes damages shingles. Heat cables can help in trouble spots but don't fix the cause.
