Look around the house first
Dents in gutters, downspouts, AC fins and mailboxes are good clues that hail was big enough to damage shingles.
On the shingles
Hail can leave dark spots where granules were knocked loose, soft bruises, or cracks. Damage isn't always visible from the ground.
Don't wait
Hidden hail damage can lead to leaks months later, and insurance claims often have time limits. Get an inspection soon after the storm.
